20th – 31st MARCH | BOAGS TURNS 50!

Mine, mine, mine!

A 20-year Mango reunion trip to end them all

With the booking tag of “Boag’s 50th Birthday Trip,” there was always going to be some shenanigans. A few extra beers and booze added to the pre-sail provisions list, and a no-judgement mandate made sure of that.

A few epic surfing sessions, a heap of fish on the lines and guns, great weather and best mates — happy birthday Boags!

DEEP SOUTH AND ALL ALONE

Before departure, the call from the seasoned Mango veterans was simple: “As far south as she’ll go.”

Cam had been looking at a photo of an iconic Mentawai righthander on the wall in the reception at Latitude Zero (his work office) for years and said, if there’s any chance of that, we want it!

The stars aligned, the Mango juju kicked in, and as we sailed further south chasing the right, the small scattering of other surfing boats were coming north. Sure enough, we found ourselves alone and surrounded by three world-class breaks to choose from.

The following day, with just the right swell and no wind, we ticked them all off in the one day… and Cam got his wish with an absolutely dreamy afternoon at his right hander.

It really doesn’t get any better, truly the “day of days,” alone in the deep south.

MEX HUNT WAS BORN

With a few keen fishermen onboard, Foxy trolling missions were common.

Some of the lads had never been pelagic hunting before, so we gave them the honours of first hook-up, and sure enough, “Greenhorn Mex” was bagging out before we knew it.

His new nickname, “Mex Hunt,” was born, and he didn’t miss another fishing mission the entire trip.

ENJOYING THE FRUITS OF A LABOUR OF LOVE

There’s many reasons why we like the south, and one of them is the fishing — along with the good trolling on the surface, Cam & Locky kept us well fed with their spearfishing catches below the surface too.

Chef Situ’s ceviche had everyone reminiscing about Central America, the sashimi had the lads wanting to get out there and fish more, and Situ’s legendary fish ‘n’ chips got a few runs too.

And while they were all good… the regular whole BBQ coconut-spiced fish was king!

A NIGHT AT CAFÉ LENA

With the swell dropping on the last day and with a little bit of encouragement, the team just couldn’t say no to a little karaoke at Café Lena in Sikakap.

Several crew who swore they wouldn’t touch a mic suddenly turned into full-blown rockstars after a few bottles of Dutch courage, and the night was voted “best of the trip,” hands down. A fitting end to an all-time trip.

Special Thanks

A big thanks to The Mighty Mango captain & crew as always, and a big special thanks to The Undertaker for being best on ground. Let’s do it again someday, lads!

Yours truly, Uncle Lip..
