Mentawai magic

Ty gets an all-star Wambi crew together for a Mighty Mango reunion

Conditions/Forecast

North winds came into play opening up some of Mentawai’s hottest spots, and a proper swell to finish the trip on.

STANDOUT SESSIONS

There were two sessions we will never forget, and plenty of fun in between.

The boys had high hopes of Greenbush and with a last minute 4am decision on the run, we turned in and found ourselves trading epic tubes alone all morning.

An incredible session also went down at Rednuts.

As we pulled up in Foxy for a recon we could not believe our eyes.

We quickly rush back to get the boards and round up the team, “IT’S ON!”. It was heavy, real heavy. A 5-wave 8ft set rolled through, and it was borderline if we could surf it. Hats off to Leigh, Ty, Sully and Doogie who took it.

Ty’s brother Dane had the best day of his trip watching his older brother knifing into a few bombs knowing that Ty had been craving some heavy Sumatran juice for a long time. As we all know the next best thing to getting tubed is watching your mates getting barreled.

A session that will be engraved in our minds for a very long time.

Wave of the trip

There was bit on the line for this title, plenty of chat each night and friendly competition for wave of the trip (WOT).

Sully got an early entry down south to soon be shown up by the one and only Mitch ‘Doogie’ Hall.

Doogie truly came out of retirement for this trip and put on an absolute clinic, even if it was just one wave per session.

Doogie’s “one & done” approach re-appeared each session knowing he wouldn’t possibly get a better wave than the first one.

Just as we thought the WOT was locked in the bag by Doogie, he went and did it again the next day at a different location. So, this trip we have two WOT and they both go to “One & Done Doogie”.

The group / Personalities

Such a good group of lads that brought the attitude “waves are just a bonus”, which almost guarantees good karma & epic waves.

It had been a minute since the last time a few of these Wambi Mango veterans had been onboard but it was just how they remembered it.

Ty got an all-star lineup together for this trip - New Zealand’s sports coach of the year ‘Tommo’, former professional bodyboarder ‘Doogie’, Italy’s former number one goalkeeper ‘Jess’, The Cornetto monster ‘Woody’, Mr. billboard ‘Fog’, Wambi’s favorite iron man ‘Sully’, Wambi’s number one fisherman ‘Merriman’, Captain good vibes ‘Dane’ and to top it all off legendary action sports photographer Tony ‘Harro’ Harrington to capture the Magic Mango moments.

Food

Nothing beats fresh fish - ocean to plate.

Ceviche, sashimi, beer battered fish’n’chips and of course Chef Situ’s wok seared Wahoo with honey mustard potato salad.

Fish on

When underway and you hear the Mango slow down in the middle of the Indian Ocean it generally means fish on! Ty jumped on the reel and scored us an early well sized Wahoo.

We followed that up with a Foxy mission on one of the smaller days and managed a double hookup that came with a bit of chaos and plenty of entertainment. As Doogie quoted “that’s better than winning the lottery”.

"This is giving me a hard on boys"

Special Thanks

Big ups for Ty getting the lads together and of course the Mighty Mango captain & crew, the best crew anyone could ask for.

Cheers Uncle Lip.
