Wilbur gets the crew together for a trip of a lifetime that has been 5 years in the making…

Words & Pics | Uncle Lip

Conditions/Forecast

The worst forecast of the year with minimal swell and strong northerly winds predicted. With an all-star lineup of epic surfers, it was going to be tricky.

STANDOUT SESSIONS

No arguing with this one. We bit the bullet and charged down south a day before the weather was due to hit, and the call paid off as we found ourselves surfing one of West Sumatra’s unicorns all to ourselves for 3 days. Not a sole in sight while we got tube after tube and the celebrations continued through to the back deck each night.

Some claiming their best waves of their life and some wanting to buy land on the point so they could spend the rest of their lives surfing that wave.

Wave of the trip

Sitting at that unicorn on the third day, waves had picked up, and a bit of wind up the face.

The call was to wait until 10am to let the tide and wind sort itself out, and at 10am WAVES ON!

Brogie paddled out and was in the wrong spot for the first one. He dropped anchor for the next hour or so and let every wave roll through that wasn’t on par.

Patience paid off - wave of his life, wave of the trip and witnessed by everyone on the back deck of the Mighty Mango.

Does it get any better?

The group / Personalities

This trip felt like a holiday. Wilbur and I had this in the making since Covid. The boys hailed from all parts of California; all got together for a Mango Madness fiesta.

Hardcore surfers and hardcore skaters, all with one attitude – we’ll have fun no matter what. From breaky beers sponsored by Island Brewing to fun waves and plenty of time fishing on the Foxy Lady. There was never a dull moment.

Food

Variety is the spice of life - breakfast, lunch, beer snacks, dinner and desert. “We loved it all”, with a couple of the guys scared to face the real world of cooking again when they get home.

Fish on

A lot of hours trolling for not much return, but we landed a couple of keepers. We will blame the post full moon this week.

"We didn't catch fish, but we caught Memories"

Sorry Tangles, you knew it was coming!

“The best trip of our lives”

Yeah, we can all agree on that one.

Special Thanks

The famous Mango juju for scoring yet again.

Cheers Uncle Lip.
